Project 1: (budget estimate: 4,000 dollars)
The LCMS Commission on Worship provides lectionary summaries to give worshipers a brief overview of the assigned readings for a Sunday or festival.
https://resources.lcms.org/worship-planning/lectionary-summaries/
- Three-Year Series A, B, C (120 pages)
- One- Year Series (44 pages)
- Feasts and Festivals (26 pages)
Original language: English
Recommendation Note: This free resource can help pastors prepare sermons using synod-sanctioned material, with a clear distinction between law and gospel and a Christ-centered focus. It can also help congregants closely follow the OT, Epistle, and NT readings each Sunday and review them at home with families.
Project 2: (budget estimate: 6,000 dollars)
Title: Amerikanisch-lutherische Evangelien Postille
(Gospel Sermons, based on the historic one-year series)
by Walther, C. F. W. (Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm), 1870
https://archive.org/details/amerikanischluth0000walt/page/176/mode/2up
Original language: German
Recommendation Note: Walther’s famous Law and Gospel lectures have been available in the Chinese world (in a partially translated, concise edition). Yet, nobody in the Chinese world knows how Walther himself applies this distinguishing principle in his preaching. This resource will allow Chinese Christians/Lutherans to hear Walther preach; needless to say, it will help Chinese pastors learn from Walther how to better apply law and gospel, precisely and fully, in their own preaching. The best way to learn how to preach is to be preached to by the best preachers.
Project 3: (budget estimate: 4,000 dollars)
Title: Small Catechism with Additional Notes (Explanations),
by Edward W. A. Koehler, 1926.
Original language: English
Recommendation Note: This has been the synodical catechism material for students, teachers, and pastors since its first release in the 20th century, inheriting much from the previous Exposition that was written by Heinrich Christian Schwan, the third president of the LCMS. Schwan’s exposition was translated into Chinese and used in China by LCMS missionaries based in Hankow. This translation of Koehler’s edition will give Chinese readers free access to a solid Lutheran catechetical resource for missions in Mainland China.
Project 4: (budget estimate: 7,000 dollars)
Title: Acta Colloquii Montis Belligartensis: Quod habitum est, Anno Christo 1586.
(Lutheranism vs. Calvinism: the classic debate at the Colloquy of Montbéliard), by Jakob Andreae, 1586.
https://www.google.com/books/edition/Acta_colloquij_Montis_Belligartensis/RipUAAAAcAAJ?hl=en
Original language: Latin
Recommendation Note: There has been little voice in the Chinese world regarding what Lutheranism stands for compared with Calvinism, as the latter has been the dominant theology in Mainland China over the past 40 years or so. This first-hand record of the colloquy between two camps in the late 16th century will help readers today on both sides understand what is truly at stake in the theological disputes. Above all, my hope is that Lutheran interpretation of the Scripture will be appreciated, confessed, and defended on that beloved land, for the sake of the clarity of the Gospel, the efficacy of the sacraments, and the assurance of salvation. By the way, Jakob Andreae was one of the authors of the Book of Concord; he wrote the Epitome of the Formula of Concord in 1577, working closely with Martin Chemnitz and other colleagues.
Project 5: (budget estimate: 8,000 dollars)
Title: The Popular Commentary of the Bible by Paul E. Kretzmann, 1922
https://archive.org/details/popularcommentar0002paul_j4l3/page/n9/mode/2up
Original language: English
Recommendation Note: The Chinese world needs a Lutheran commentary, and we don’t have any so far. This commentary is a well-read and time-tested publication in the 20th century. It will serve Chinese readers well, especially in Mainland China.
Project 6: (budget estimate: 7,000 dollars)
Title: Chinese Lutheran Witness, 1930s.
Original language: Chinese
Recommendation Note: This will be a collected republication of all archived Chinese Lutheran Witness series issued in the 1930s by LCMS missionaries alongside locally trained pastors. My hope is that this publication will restore the Chinese Lutheran Witness for China and Chinese all over the world today, addressing contemporary issues and proclaiming the good news with bold Lutheran confessions.
